Bristol Humanists: Zion Lights on why environmentalism went nuclear

Organised by the Bristol Humanists, we are pleased to support:
Energy is Life: Why Environmentalism Went Nuclear, Zion Lights’ personal and powerful journey: from grassroots green activism to becoming one of the UK’s leading advocates for nuclear energy
In a time of climate crisis, energy poverty and growing demand for clean power, she examines why long-established environmentalists like herself once feared nuclear energy, why many have since come to embrace it, and she makes a compelling case for why nuclear energy must be part of the solution. Accessible, evidence-based, and deeply human, there is a challenge to common myths and an invitation for people to rethink what it really means to care for others and the planet alike. If you believe in a greener, fairer future, Energy is Life just might change your mind – and give you hope.
“In this vivid book, Zion Lights offers strong evidence, clear thinking, and good sense on the biggest issue of our time” Stephen Pinker, Prof of Psychology, Harvard University
“Perhaps the time has come for the green movement to re-evaluate its position on civilian nuclear power. In this book, Zion Lights with her impressive environmental track record and lucid science communication shows why.” Professor Alastair McIntosh, author of Riders on the Storm
“A call to action against climate change using science and storytelling, this is a must-read for environmental activists and policy makers alike. Zion shows how we can leave behind shibboleths and sentiment to give a clear-eyed way forward to a better future for all.” Lizzi Collinge, MP & Chair All-party Parliamentary Humanist Group
Zion Lights, a patron of Humanists UK, is an award-winning science communicator and environmental advocate who makes complex science clear and compelling. She explores energy, climate, and technology through the lens of human challenges, showing how curiosity and evidence can shape a better future. She will combine technical clarity with a sense of wonder, helping us to see the big questions and the choices that define our civilisation. In addition to her new book Energy is Life, she also wrote the evidence-based The Ultimate Guide to Green Parenting, the nature poetry book Only a Moment, and has contributed to multiple other titles including humanitarian Rob Greenfield’s Zero Waste Kids and the French book Lumieres sue le Nucleaire. In 2023 Zion held the Scientific Section Presidency for Education for the British Science Festival. She was awarded the Holyoake Lecture medal by Humanists UK and also holds a Masters degree in science communication from the University of West of England.
Everyone is welcome. The event is FREE to Bristol Humanist members; others we request £5/£2 towards our costs.
