Her words are found on Young Poets’ Stories\, the British Museum’s YouTube channel\, and in various anthologies. Bloodaxe recently published her debut collection\, Hot Sauce.

Do get in touch if you have any questions.\nJoin us for Poetry In Herons with Elizabeth Parker\nJoin us in the Arcade after hours for our monthly poetry reading. 6pm\, Saturday 14th September. \nIn September we are celebrating the publication of Cormorant\, the second collection from Elizabeth Parker. \nElizabeth Parker was born in London and grew up in Pygmy Pinetum Garden Nurseries\, a garden centre in The Forest of Dean. She lives in Bristol with her partner and two sons. Elizabeth was a secondary school English teacher for eight years and is writing two novels based on her experiences teaching Shakespeare to teenagers. \nElizabeth’s poetry has been published in various journals and has won and been shortlisted for a range of prizes. Following her 2016 pamphlet\, Antinopolis (published by Eyewear)\, Elizabeth’s first full collection\, In Her Shambles\, was published by Seren Books in April 2018 and her second collection\, Cormorant\, was published by Seren this February. Elizabeth is a founding member of Bristol poetry quartet The Spoke\, who perform their work at festivals and events. She is also co-host of monthly Bristol poetry event Under The Red Guitar. \nElizabeth is currently experimenting with poetic forms as she works on a long poem about her wonderful father\, who has late-stage dementia\, and a collection about the life and sudden loss of her sister\, the playwright and glorious human being Helen K Parker. Her pamphlet collection Convergence was selected as a recommended read by the Poetry Book Society. She was a runner-up twice in the Bridport Prize. His second collection\, Gen (Seren\, 2018)\, also received the Wales Book of the Year People’s Choice Award\, and in 2019 his poem about Newport Bridge was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem. He received the Troubadour Poetry Prize in 2022. He has been a judge for the National Poetry Competition and the Wales Book of the Year\, a Literature Wales mentor of emerging writers and a Royal Literary Fund Fellow. His first collection was a PBS Recommendation and was shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Award and in 2019 he was shortlisted for the Ledbury Forte Prize. \nHe was born in Belfast in 1981\, grew up mainly in Lincolnshire\, once lived in Bristol for five years\, and now lives in Nottingham\, where he teaches at NTU. He also co-runs the pamphlet publisher New Walk Editions\, and publishes a lot of literary journalism. Website: rorywaterman.com. \nThe evening will begin with a reading from Zoe Brooks\, followed by Rory’s reading. \nZoe has been writing and performing poetry as long as she can remember. Her career began when she was discovered by Michael Horovitz of Poetry Olympics. She still believes in the power of poetry in performance\, in the alchemy that exists between poet and audience. Zoe has had two collections published recently: Owl Unbound (Indigo Dreams\, 2020) and Fool’s Paradise (Black Eyes Publishing\, 2022). DESCRIPTION:Heron Books is delighted to support an evening of poetry with Alice Oswald\, Caroline Bird and Rachel Long as part of Lyra – Bristol Poetry Festival 2024. \nAlice Oswald has published 6 collections of poetry\, including Dart which won the TS Eliot Prize. A gardener and poet\, Alice Oswald lived and worked for many years at Dartington in Devon. She is the first female Professor of Poetry at Oxford\, and has particular interest in poetry as an oral tradition. \nRachel Long’s debut collection\, My Darling from the Lions was published by Picador in the UK\, in 2020. It was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection\, The Costa Book Award\, The Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award\, The Rathbones Folio Prize\, and the Jhalak Prize Book of the Year by a Writer of Colour. \nCaroline Bird’s selected poems\, Rookie (2022)\, and The Air Year (2020) are two of Carcanet’s most popular books of the present decade. She won the Forward Prize for Best Collection in 2020\, and has been shortlisted for a number of prizes including the TS Eliot Prize\, the Costa Book Awards\, the Ted Hughes Award\, the Polari Prize and the Dylan Thomas Prize.

She has been published in both pamphlets and anthologies and brought out her collection Kneeling in Dust in 2020. \nDominic Fisher taught English for many years in both Bristol and internationally. His poems have been widely published\, broadcast and won prizes. His second collection A Customised Selection of Fireworks came out in 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Our poetry series continues with Carrie Etter\, author of The Weather in Normal amongst other collections\, and Emma Jones\, author of The Striped World. The two poets will read some of their poems for around 15 minutes each\, followed by an opportunity to ask questions or have copies of their books signed. \nEntry is free and all are very welcome. Please RSVP to read@heronbooks.co.uk or on social media so that we can keep track of numbers. \n— \nAmerican expat Carrie Etter lectures in creative writing at the University of Bristol and has published four collections of poetry as well as numerous essays\, short stories\, and reviews. Carrie’s poems have appeared in The New Republic\, The New Statesman\, The Penguin Book of the Prose Poem\, Poetry Review\, and The Times Literary Supplement. Her published collections include 2018’s The Weather in Normal\, and her fifth collection\, Grief’s Alphabet\, will be published next year. \nEmma Jones was born in Sydney and studied at the universities of Sydney and Cambridge. Her first book\, The Striped World (2009)\, won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and the Queensland Premier’s Literary Award for Best Collection. Emma wrote the libretto for City Songs\, a contemporary oratorio\, with composer Eriks Esenvalds\, which premiered at The Round House in London with vocalist Imogen Heap. She was one of the Poetry Book Society’s Next Generation Poets for 2014 and has held writing fellowships in Cambridge\, the Lake District\, Rome and Riga\, and is at work on a second book. She previously taught at the University of Oxford and is currently Senior Lecturer in Poetry at Bath Spa University.

Please RSVP to read@heronbooks.co.uk or on social media so that we can keep track of numbers. \n— \nOriginally from rural Herefordshire\, with roots in South Wales\, Bristol-based Jan Edwards is a regular contributor to Bristol’s thriving poetry scene. She has an MA in Anglo-Welsh Literature\, taught English for many years and now works with vulnerable\, unemployed young people in North Somerset. She performs poetry on her own and also in various collaborations including JanJonJow which interweaves Jon Hamp’s magical poetry\, her own and the delicately quirky cello/trumpet combo of Pete Judge and James Gow (JOW).\n\nJon Hamp is a lifelong lover of words\, born and raised on the far shores of Kelston Roundhill in the Cotswolds. The poet\, educator\, and navigator all affectionately combine in his work and illustrate interest in landscape and time and our impact\, and lack of impact\, upon both. All possible steps are taken to detect the vacuous and unnecessary; there is honest attempt to stay grounded and surprise and entertain; pushing for something a little different to illuminate our environment. Jon is the Kelston poet laureate and his other projects include The Other Side of the Tracks\, a collaboration with Bristol photographer Neil Phillips to document Bath City FC matchdays in poetry and pictures.

She has twice won First Prize in the Gloucestershire Writers’ Network Poetry Competition. Her work has appeared in various journals\, anthologies and podcasts. In 2021 she was mentored by Fiona Benson\, under the Dialect Mentoring Scheme (a competitive scheme funded by Arts Council England). Sarah’s first pamphlet\, Night after Night in the Quiet House\, was published by Maytree Press on National Poetry Day 2022.\nShe tweets at @SarahHemings1.\n—\nNina Parmenter is a poet and mum from Wiltshire. SUMMARY:Poetry in Herons - Bob Walton
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first in a series of poetry readings. We are kicking off with local poet Bob Walton\, author of the marvellous Sax Burglar Blues. \nBob was born in Cardiff but has lived in Bristol for decades and in Hotwells for 18 years. He has a PhD from Cardiff University\, where he taught Creative Writing until last year. In 2020 and 2021\, he won the North American Festival of Wales Poetry Prizes and was highly commended in the Troubadour International Poetry Competition\, also being highly commended in the Desmond O’Grady International Award 2022. A member of The Spoke poetry collective\, he has read at a wide range of venues and festivals and often performs in collaboration with musicians and other artists. Bob also facilitates community workshops and hosts poetry events such as the monthly ‘Under the Red Guitar’ at El Rincon in Southville and the bi-monthly on-line Speakeasy Poetry Nights. His second collection\, Sax Burglar Blues (Seren) was shortlisted for Wales Arts Review’s Book of the Year 2018 and he is currently working towards his third collection. \nEntry is free and all are very welcome.
