For the first time\, she explores her lifelong asthma and explains the impact of this chronic and disabling condition. The breath and breathing are subjects for poems from many chronologies and geographies in this her ninth collection. \nKate Noakes is the author of nine collections of poetry\, one pamphlet and one book of non-fiction. She has a PhD in Critical and Creative Writing from the University of Reading. She recently moved from London to Bristol\, where she co-founded the poetry performance group\, Braid. It examines a new mother’s journey through mental illness\, her relationships with her body\, her baby and other people\, and the often surreal landscape of mothering\, against a backdrop of a changing and uncertain world. \nA dreamlike birth sequence full of eels\, foxes and floodwater empties onto a London postnatal ward\, where reality sets in. Rudderless and anxious\, the new mother writes notes to herself\, joins support groups and tries medication. She climbs into myth and prayer\, nightmare and song\, criss-crossing her neighbourhood with a pram\, until she starts to feel better. Hesketh’s poems speak of the many things motherhood can mean\, the structures it is made to fit inside. Her work explores history\, imagined worlds\, and desire within the context of black femininity. She has been commissioned to write poems for the Barbican Centre\, English Heritage\, the Institute of Contemporary Art with BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 6\, NHS Arts and Heritage\, Pace Gallery\, and Poetry Vs Colonialism in conjunction with the London Metropolitan Archives. Sweet Bone Girl is her debut collection of poetry. \nSweet Bone Girl examines the intricate dynamics of desire as it intertwines with Black womanhood\, negotiating the boundaries of history\, culture\, and identity. Esme Allman’s evocative poetry moves between the personal and the collective\, interlacing the past with the present to investigate how desire is shaped and claimed. With striking introspection\, Allman interrogates the influence of external forces—family\, lovers\, popular culture—and asks: where can desire be truly known? Her fourth poetry collection\, Battery Rocks\, (Seren\, 2024) is the winner of the Arthur Welton Award from the Society of Authors. Katrina’s previous collections have won an Authors’ Foundation Award and Saboteur Award; she is a recipient of the Keats-Shelley Prize and has twice been highly commended in the Forward Prize. Katrina’s poetry has appeared on Poems on the Underground\, BBC Radio 4’s Front Row\, Open Country and Poetry Please\, and in The TLS\, The Poetry Review and Modern Poetry in Translation. She has a PhD from Goldsmiths and tutors for Arvon and the Poetry School. Katrina lives in Cornwall. www.katrinanaomi.co.uk \nIn Battery Rocks\, Katrina Naomi returns to the Cornish swimming spot – Battery Rocks in Penzance – every day for a year. On each swim\, she finds something fresh and invigorating. \nExploring the sea in all its mercurial forms\, Naomi questions the world through the lens of nature and the more than human. Poems like ‘And if there were no sea?’\, which recognises both the power and danger of the sea\, as well as all that would be lost if it didn’t exist\, approach the climate emergency from aslant\, offering a new take on one of the most pressing concerns of our times. \nNaomi also examines issues of fear\, strength and vulnerability\, writing in response to an attempted rape and other experienced attacks. She questions how she can feel safer alone\, in a raging sea in winter\, in nothing but a swimming costume\, than on dry land. In poems like ‘The Sea Speaks’ and ‘i.m. Sarah Everard’\, the risks of swimming are juxtaposed with the dangers on shore for women. \nBattery Rocks revels in friendship\, love and community. The Cornish language and landscape are deeply entwined\, and Naomi deftly experiments with poems in Kernewek (Cornish) and English. The collection ends in the strange beauty of ‘in the kelp forest’\, winner of the prestigious Keats-Shelley Prize for Poetry. Finding joy through immersion in nature\, Battery Rocks is a thoughtful meditation on nature\, risk\, swimming and the sea.

Deb works part time in a school for deaf children\, part time as a support worker for one of her adult children who has autism\, and part time as a poetry group facilitator. She co-runs Bristol’s longest-running open mic\, Silver Street\, and is a member of the IsamBards\, a group of four poets who conduct poetry walks around Bristol. She has six collections of poetry and a novel\, all published by Indigo Dreams. RSVP to read@heronbooks.co.uk. \nJohn Greening is a poet\, critic\, editor and translator\, a Bridport\, Arvon and Cholmondeley winner and author of over twenty collections\, The Interpretation of Owls: Selected Poems 1977-2022 (Baylor UP ed. Gardner) came out in 2023. He has edited Matthew Arnold\, Geoffrey Grigson\, Edmund Blunden\, Iain Crichton Smith and a new U.A.Fanthorpe\, plus several critical studies and anthologies\, most recently (with Kevin Gardner) Contraflow: Lines of Englishness\, a Guardian and Sunday Times Book of the Year. His Goethe translations appeared in 2022 from Arc and there is a forthcoming Rilke. \nU.A.Fanthorpe (1929-2009) was one of the UK’s most popular poets\, but it’s not well known that her writing career began in Bristol. She had given up her teaching post and become what she liked to call  ‘a middle-aged drop-out’. While working as a hospital receptionist in the 1970s she began writing (literally in her lunch hours) the work that would soon make her famous in ways very rare for any poet. She lives in Bristol with her partner and two sons. Elizabeth was a secondary school English teacher for eight years and is writing two novels based on her experiences teaching Shakespeare to teenagers. \nElizabeth’s poetry has been published in various journals and has won and been shortlisted for a range of prizes. Following her 2016 pamphlet\, Antinopolis (published by Eyewear)\, Elizabeth’s first full collection\, In Her Shambles\, was published by Seren Books in April 2018 and her second collection\, Cormorant\, was published by Seren this February. Elizabeth is a founding member of Bristol poetry quartet The Spoke\, who perform their work at festivals and events. She is also co-host of monthly Bristol poetry event Under The Red Guitar. \nElizabeth is currently experimenting with poetic forms as she works on a long poem about her wonderful father\, who has late-stage dementia\, and a collection about the life and sudden loss of her sister\, the playwright and glorious human being Helen K Parker. His first collection was a PBS Recommendation and was shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Award and in 2019 he was shortlisted for the Ledbury Forte Prize. \nHe was born in Belfast in 1981\, grew up mainly in Lincolnshire\, once lived in Bristol for five years\, and now lives in Nottingham\, where he teaches at NTU. He also co-runs the pamphlet publisher New Walk Editions\, and publishes a lot of literary journalism. DESCRIPTION:Heron Books is delighted to support an evening of poetry with Alice Oswald\, Caroline Bird and Rachel Long as part of Lyra – Bristol Poetry Festival 2024. \nAlice Oswald has published 6 collections of poetry\, including Dart which won the TS Eliot Prize. A gardener and poet\, Alice Oswald lived and worked for many years at Dartington in Devon. She is the first female Professor of Poetry at Oxford\, and has particular interest in poetry as an oral tradition. \nRachel Long’s debut collection\, My Darling from the Lions was published by Picador in the UK\, in 2020. It was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection\, The Costa Book Award\, The Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award\, The Rathbones Folio Prize\, and the Jhalak Prize Book of the Year by a Writer of Colour. \nCaroline Bird’s selected poems\, Rookie (2022)\, and The Air Year (2020) are two of Carcanet’s most popular books of the present decade. She won the Forward Prize for Best Collection in 2020\, and has been shortlisted for a number of prizes including the TS Eliot Prize\, the Costa Book Awards\, the Ted Hughes Award\, the Polari Prize and the Dylan Thomas Prize.

Please RSVP to read@heronbooks.co.uk or on social media so that we can keep track of numbers. \n— \nGillie Harries has drawn inspiration from her birthplace on the Suffolk coastline and from sites around her adopted city of Bristol. She has been published in both pamphlets and anthologies and brought out her collection Kneeling in Dust in 2020. \nDominic Fisher taught English for many years in both Bristol and internationally. His poems have been widely published\, broadcast and won prizes. His second collection A Customised Selection of Fireworks came out in 2022.

The two poets will read some of their poems for around 15 minutes each\, followed by an opportunity to ask questions or have copies of their books signed. \nEntry is free and all are very welcome. Please RSVP to read@heronbooks.co.uk or on social media so that we can keep track of numbers. \n— \nAmerican expat Carrie Etter lectures in creative writing at the University of Bristol and has published four collections of poetry as well as numerous essays\, short stories\, and reviews. Carrie’s poems have appeared in The New Republic\, The New Statesman\, The Penguin Book of the Prose Poem\, Poetry Review\, and The Times Literary Supplement. Her published collections include 2018’s The Weather in Normal\, and her fifth collection\, Grief’s Alphabet\, will be published next year. \nEmma Jones was born in Sydney and studied at the universities of Sydney and Cambridge. Her first book\, The Striped World (2009)\, won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and the Queensland Premier’s Literary Award for Best Collection. Emma wrote the libretto for City Songs\, a contemporary oratorio\, with composer Eriks Esenvalds\, which premiered at The Round House in London with vocalist Imogen Heap. She was one of the Poetry Book Society’s Next Generation Poets for 2014 and has held writing fellowships in Cambridge\, the Lake District\, Rome and Riga\, and is at work on a second book. She previously taught at the University of Oxford and is currently Senior Lecturer in Poetry at Bath Spa University.
