DESCRIPTION:Join us to launch Colin Bramwell’s poetry collection Fetch. \nAbout the author\nColin Bramwell was born in Ayrshire\, grew up in Fortrose on the Black Isle and lives in Edinburgh. His poetry and criticism has appeared in Poetry Review\, Irish Pages\, The London Magazine\, PN Review\, Magma\, The Rialto\, New Writing Scotland\, Interpret\, Poetry Scotland\, Poetry London\, Poetry Ireland Review and The Scotsman\, as well as in his pamphlet The Highland Citizenship Test. He was the runner-up for the 2020 Edwin Morgan Prize. His translations of Taiwanese poets won the John Dryden Translation Competition and the Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize. Fower Pessoas\, his rendition of Fernando Pessoa into Scots\, was published by Carcanet in 2025 and was shortlisted for Scots Book of the Year. \nAbout Fetch\nIn Celtic folklore a fetch is a shadowy doppelganger that appears from the Otherworld\, portending the beholder’s fate. Your fetch ‘fetches’ you to the afterlife\, willingly or otherwise. Bramwell’s poetry uses the fetch as a model to explore a number of overlapping binaries – between the reader and the poem\, most of all.\nFetch also meditates on the differences between music and speech\, the sacred and the profane\, the written and the real\, humanity and nature\, Scots and English. Incorporating multitudes of modes\, forms\, registers and subjects\, Bramwell converses with the Anglo-Celtic lyric tradition in our own time and in his own distinctively amiable fashion. In other words\, this poet takes poetry seriously – but not too seriously.\nFetch is an astonishingly musical tour-de-force from one of Britain’s most exciting new poets\, in which reverence and irreverence\, religion and faithlessness\, the living and the dead\, nearly rhyme. \nJoin us for a drink\, a reading and a discussion.\nThe event is free to attend. SUMMARY:Bristol Humanists: Robin Dunbar on How Religion Evolved and why it survives
DESCRIPTION:We look forward to supporting this event organised by the Bristol Humanists with Robin Dunbar\, author of How Religion Evolved. \nWhen did humans develop spiritual thought? What is religion’s evolutionary purpose? And in our increasingly secular world\, why has it endured? \nEvery society in the history of humanity has lived with religion. In How Religion Evolved\, its origins are tracked back to what Robin Dunbar terms the ‘mystical stance\,’ the aspect of human psychology that predisposes us to believe in a transcendent world\, and which makes an encounter with the spiritual possible. He will explore world religions and their many derivatives\, as well as religions of experience practised by hunter-gatherer societies. This instinct is not a peculiar human quirk\, an aberration on our otherwise efficient evolutionary journey. Rather\, religion confers an advantage: it can benefit our individual health and wellbeing\, but\, more importantly\, it fosters social bonding at large scale\, helping hold fractious societies together. These dimensions might provide the basis for an overarching theory for why and how humans are religious\, and so help unify the myriad strands that currently populate this field. Drawing on path-breaking research\, clinical case studies and fieldwork from around the globe\, as well as stories of charismatic cult leaders\, mysterious sects and lost faiths\, How Religion Evolved will offer a fascinating and far-reaching analysis of this quintessentially human impulse to believe. \nRobin Dunbar is Emeritus Professor of Evolutionary Psychology at the University of Oxford. He is perhaps most famous for the ‘Dunbar Number’\, which is the 150 individuals that each human can sustain meaningful relationships with. His work in anthropology and psychology focuses on the mechanisms that underpin social bonding in primates in general\, and humans in particular. He considers that understanding these mechanisms\, which includes religion\, and the functions that those relationships serve\, will give us insights into how humans have managed to create large scale societies using a form of psychology that is evolutionarily adapted to very small scale societies\, and why these mechanisms are less than perfect in the modern world. He has authored numerous books in the fields of evolutionary psychology and anthropology. He is also a patron of Humanists UK\, and was one of the first national Darwin Day lecturers when the event was established in the early 2000’s. \nEveryone is welcome. Wrong: today’s anti-abortion movements is largely financed and planned by far-right extremists. Many of them are avowedly fascist and white supremacist\, afraid of a “great replacement” of the world’s white population by other races\, who are working hard to reshape governments and policies across Europe\, North America and around the world.
